What is a Skilled Swing Bed Program?

If interested in learning more, here is a 2-page brochure that explains more about what we do to share with others and how to contact us.

The Swing-bed program provides short-term rehabilitative services in a hospital setting. The program makes available the full range of Salem Memorial District Hospital's services to its patients and emphasizes an aggressive rehabilitation and medical program that helps build strength and endurance.

The Swing-Bed Difference
This program allows patients to stay close-to-home while still receiving the best possible care. Patients will appreciate the continuity of care; having access to the same staff who treated the patient during their hospital stay, as well as the convenience of having instant access to necessary services in one location. Another benefit of the program is the Swing-bed Coordinator and Social Services Director work closely with patients and their families on admission and discharge planning.

Who is eligible?
Patients admitted to the swing-bed program must meet the following criteria:
     - Prior to admission, Medicare patients must have been hospitalized for acute care for at least three consecutive days, within the last 30 days for the same condition
     - The patient must be admitted by a physician
     - Must be able to tolerate therapy and/or need skilled nursing care

Financial information
The cost of the swing-bed program per day is similar to nursing home costs. Insurances, such as Medicare, Private Insurance and Workmen's Compensation can be used to assist with payment. Nursing Home insurance policies may also pay for the swing-bed program. Some insurances may require pre-certification prior to admission. For questions regarding payment, contact Patient Financial Services at 573-729-6626.
